From a security talk I give now and then:

The only reason that some of us haven't had our identities stolen yet has little to do with better security; it's simply that there aren't enough bad guys to go around.

SK, At least in the hollywood movies (I am not citing it as a reliable source, just as an instance), the people whose identities are stolen, are exactly the ones that others care little about (those that are socially isolated etc.) It is not hard to imagine tons of malicious use one can put such an identity to.

Yes, that's right -- identity theft isn't about someone wanting to be you; the attacker couldn't care less about you. They just want to take all the money in your bank account. The more "ordinary" a person is, the better.

I guess identity theft happens in movies in order to make the victim look like a murder suspect or something. That's less common in real life than the financial motivation.
