Nerdy school [Aug. 3rd, 2004|06:17 pm]

I came to know that in my former high school, half the computers are running linux and even sixth and seventh graders use the command line. I've got to admit I'm immensely proud of that.

P.S. Senior Secondary school, Madras. I guess by VM you mean Vidya Mandir? Definitely a good school, but can't hold a candle to P.S :)

Some more stats I remember now: there were 6 N.T.S scholars out of ~100 students in my batch; 14 students who cleared IIT JEE. Every year beginning with mine ('99) there's been at least one student winning a medal in one of the international olympiads.

It was a total nerd magnet. Nerds from other schools would flock to P.S after finishing class X in the hope of having a more conducive atmosphere. Only those with ridiculously high scores in class X could get in. It was a self-sustatining positive feedback effect. I remember cutting sports breaks to sit in class and work out math. Half the class would do the same.

Best part: the tuition fee was Rs. 350 ($7) a month. Beat that for efficiency.

Holy Shit!! Yup, that's my batch. You must have been in Pavakka (Parvatinathan)'s batch. It's through his brother Muthu (one year my junior) that I've managed to keep in touch with the goings on at the old alma mater.

Well, I went through the motions with French for my class X exam (wasn't in P.S at the time) and still remember a few words. I seem to have made a speciality of forgetting languages: Hindi, French, German. I also struggled with Russian and Sanskrit for a few weeks before giving up.
