What's wrong with IM? [Apr. 2nd, 2007|02:55 am]

Instant messaging is incredibly convenient -- unlike email, it's immediate, and unlike phone calls, you can ignore a message if you're busy. But yet I find myself talking to only a dozen or so people by IM with any regularity, in spite of the fact that I'm almost always signed on and between my various accounts, I have like 150 people on my friend lists. Most of my friends just never seem to sign on.

Why?

In particular, my 60-or-so mutual LJ friends, why are you not using your LJ Talk service? (Well, other than the 2 or 3 of you that do.) It's free, it's open and interoperable, and it auto-imports your friends list. What more could you ask for?

I'm using gaim with my LJ account signed on through Tor network (Thanks to GFW). So I don't think I can keep online very often.

Will you friend me? Thanks.

That's interesting -- do you live in the PRC?

Is there a lag issue when using gaim with Tor?

Nothing personal, but I can't read Zhongwen, and you don't seem to post in English.

Most everyone I talk to online has a Gmail account, so I just chat with them through Gmail.

I used to use IM clients to dhat with people on an extremely frequent basis. Then the number of people who wanted to talk with me (and, let's face it, the number of men who wanted to proposition me) grew out of hand and it became difficult to maintain any real conversations.

Now I use IM on a daily basis to keep in touch with close friends, but I don't chat with farther-flung Internet friends all that often -- LJ client or not.

I've been thinking of offering to make "LJ Bot (Frank)" more intelligent, to compensate for dearth of IM friends. ;)

I'm gonna try to run Alicebot pretending to be me and see if anyone notices :)

For a brief moment, after reading the subject of your post, I thought that there was some personal grugde against me that you decided to make public ;-)

IM distracts me in a way I don't like. A related issue is that I don't have internet at home right now, and I don't want to have IM on at work.
