Back when I was obsessed with things like memorizing 1000 digits of pi
, I also learnt to solve the Rubik's cube
. My cube lay forgotten for many years until my interest was rekindled a few days back. I quickly re-learnt the key algorithms (I use the corners first
method) and I've brought my average down to under a minute now. I hope to reduce it to 40 seconds in a couple of weeks :) Further reduction would require a much better cube and/or months of practice.
The world's best speed cubists have averages of under 20 seconds. Check out this amazing video
On another note, I found it really amusing that today's Featured article on wikipedia
is ... well I'll let you find out. This is surely the only general purpose encyclopedia that even has an entry at all on such obscure topics of interest only to geeks, not to mention putting them on the front page!
