Languages [Jul. 8th, 2006|06:24 pm]
Arvind Narayanan

My language learning drive is going well. I've bought a couple of French audio CDs and started going to a weekly francophile conversation group. After buying a Spanish phrasebook, TV in español now makes a little bit more sense. I've learnt a few more words of Chinese and set up a weekly schedule with my officemate.

I'm struck by the difference in the difficulty of pronouncing French vs. Spanish. Of all the languages I (have attempted to) speak, French is by far the hardest to pronounce correctly. Chinese is actually easier. German might sound very different but I didn't find it hard to learn. Spanish, at the other end of the spectrum, is a cakewalk. I think even someone who doesn't speak the language at all can, with a little bit of effort, read out a piece of text with virtually no discernible accent. Interesting.

All this reminds me that I have an accent speaking my native language. Sad.

Oui oui... c'est ça! Vraiment.

...and I can tell by writing that how much I'm losing!
