Finally encountered a rude person [Aug. 31st, 2004|06:00 pm]
Arvind Narayanan
After nearly a month in the U.S, for the first time I interacted (although only virtually) with someone who wasn't polite. Guess who it was? A Unix admin.

What did the admin say?

What went between you and the admin?

Re: hai

you needn't have left your name, I can recognize you from the way you spell hi :)

Well I just asked the admin politely if they have an antialiased version of firefox installed somewhere. He said something like "it won't work on our systems, you'll have to ask X" where X is some other email address. So I obviously assumed that X was the admin for some other set of systems, and emailed X. Turns out the same asshole was looking after the other address too. Now what kind of moron would ask me to mail some other address if it too went to him? On top of that he got pissed of that I was "wasting his time" and sent me an arrogant and snobbish reply.

Re: hai

I thought UT Austin's CS labs would be technologically very advanced, as the CS department itself is ranked highly. I wonder which is the lab at which the admin installs the latest version of firefox as soon as it is released; even antialiasing is always desirable. Disappointing that it doesn't happen at UTA.

Re: hai

No, the computing facilities (especially the system administration) are pretty depressing. Maybe I'll post about that in more detail. Yes I think I will.

So how's Canada? You got a blog yourself somewhere?

Here too the same case that is what I learned from some of the other guys in my lab eventhough I have not ventured into any problem with them. I think everywhere sys ad are like that :)
Canada is nice. Peaceful. My prof also not around for 3 months. So doing some independent work but very slowly. How is ur environment? ( I think the message is becoming more personal...better to do in mail I suppose...:)) )
