Today I was talking to someone who said she used a PC instead of a Mac in order to be -- wait for it -- anti-conformist :-) I guess depending on your social circle, that's not all that surprising. Of course, we were talking about laptops; no one buys desktops for personal use anymore.

In other news, Chase just gave me free money with one of their offers. Having fully expected them to scam me with some fine print, I'm pleasantly surprised.

no one?

>>no one buys desktops for personal use anymore
should read as no one who doesn't do software development or gaming buys desktops for personal use anymore.

Re: no one?

Logical literalism is the enemy of meaningful conversation.

Besides, more and more people laptops are gaming capable these days.

I'm thinking of doing that :) Mostly because I'm tired of having my laptop go nuts, and not being able to fix it myself. Plus, time for a little change, methinks.

Do you move often? I do, and it would be nightmarishly hard to lug a desktop around.

How do you mean, laptop go nuts? Worst case, reinstall the OS?

I actually upgraded the memory in an aging laptop. It was breezy.

Besides, laptops are almost cheap enough to be throw-away-if-it-breaks items these days. I own 3 at this point :)

I don't imagine that I'll be moving very much after this fall (or so I hope!)
And software problems would be excellent - I've had trouble with the motherboard power connector. It's happened twice, and both times have been within a *week* of my warranty expiring. It's going to cost me $300 to get it fixed this time, which isn't worth it.
I do agree with your last point, though. Perhaps a laptop-desktop combo would be good. I think I'm just itching for some change :)

Sorry to barge into this thread, but was this a Dell laptop?

I've been battling the same problem, apparently it's a common fault and I'm looking for alternatives to spending 400$ on a 750$ laptop that's less than a year old. I'd rather junk it. *note to self: for laptops, ALWAYS buy extended warranty* Or just for fun go looking for a soldering iron and try to fix the problem myself (or find someone who can weild one).

Limited choices are forcing me to look Mac-wards. *end rant*

HP, actually. Probably the heaviest laptop ever built by man. Still, when it worked, it did a darn fine job.
