The good. Yesterday I was trying to recollect Spanish phrases I knew, just to pass the time, and I came up blank for "you're very beautiful". I tried for a while and then gave up. This morning, I noticed the woman checking our passports before baggage check-in; she was super-hot. I had about a minute before it was my turn to show my passport. Impelled by the need to actually use the phrase, my brain went into overdrive and found what I wanted with about 5 seconds to spare.

Tu eres muy bonita.

Big smile. Blush. Gracias.

Guess I must have gotten it right then :)

The bad. I don't even fly that much and sometimes I feel like Tom Hanks in The Terminal. Airports and airplanes are hell. I hate everything about them. Especially the bogus security checks. My flight from Barcelona to Newark was bad for a number of reasons, not the least of which was that they played the worst movie of the decade. TWICE. I'm not kidding.

When the flight landed, a number of people clapped. I've seen this happen once before. What the heck is up with that? It's beyond absurd, beyond ridiculous. You've paid too much for the trip, been packed like sardines in a ten hour flight, served an excuse for meals, not been allowed to bring your own food on board, and generally been treated like shit by governments that have hijacked air travel as a vehicle for keeping the crowds in a state of fear. AND AT THE END OF THIS CHARADE YOU CLAP? YOU NEED LOBOTOMIES, YOU SHEEP. Did you actually think you were going to die? What would it take to penetrate through your skulls the fact that air travel is in fact a lot safer mile for mile than any other form?

The lucky. I'm sitting in Newark again. My incoming was delayed by more than an hour so, making me miss my connecting, and they put me on a later flight. Which turns out to be a really really good thing. (Actually, I might have dawdled a bit to make sure this would happen. But don't tell anyone.) Now I have some time to stretch my legs and put some distance between ass and seat before I get on another 6 hour flight to SFO. And Newark/Liberty actually has good food! Wow.

Whoa, they played that movie on our flight from Anchorage to Seattle. It looked really dumb though, so I opted for some BSG and a nap :)

The clapping is for the pilot if the landing is smooth, otherwise he can scare the shit out of anybody
