How would you decide? [Nov. 28th, 2004|04:36 am]
Arvind Narayanan
This Netgear wireless router is selling like hotcakes for $35 on amazon, through tigerdirect, and is #1 on the list of movers and shakers in electronics. I'm in the market for a wireless router, so I did the obvious thing and checked out CNet's review of the thing. I was pleasantly surprised to see it had an Editor's rating of "very good", and even an editor's choice award, but scrolling down I got a shock - it has a user rating of 45%, which is horrible. So which do you believe? What's worse, the editor's review claims it is easy for newbies to set up, and the user reviews claim the opposite. On the one hand, the editor could have been biased towards the product because he was a user of it; on the other hand the negative user reviews could be "reverse astroturfing" or whatever its called (or just pure coincidence). Amazon shows you all the reviews of a particular reviewer, so astroturfing is nearly impossible, but CNet doesn't. How would you decide? I think I'm going to go with the editor's view.

On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog. So never trust anything, triple check everything.

Yeah, the Netgear boxes are real nice. I used to have one. Does exactly what it says on the tin and has an easy web interface.

Plus it looks kind of stylish :D

Tough call. The users might be people who know absolutely nothing about computer gear, or close to it, or can't follow instructions well. But the editor probably has set up a few routers in his day, so this one would be easy compared to the others.

Decision like this: if(exists(option-with-free-OS)) { buy-free-OS-capable-machine; }

I run a Linksys WRT54G with OpenWRT.

i do have a netgear wireless router (MR814v2) and it is kind a cool. Also, over the weekend I had a chance to configure a belkin wireless router for a friend of mine. it is a real steal. the pcmcia card and the router (54mbps) was less than $50 after the rebate.

but given a chance, i would like to try the wrt54gs from linksys. i have heard people crave about it.
